Conversations with Sports Fans – Cortina Reflections

Samsung Connects Athletes and Fans to Milano Cortina 2026 Moments With Mobile Innovation – Samsung Global Newsroom

When I launched my Around the World in 80 Sporting Events Project, I knew an Olympic year would inevitably cross my path. In truth, chasing a dream of attending 80 of the world’s most iconic sporting events and venues wouldn’t feel complete without experiencing an Olympiad.

Because of my self-imposed June 2027 deadline, it was always likely that the Winter Games would make the list—and I couldn’t have been happier about that. My memories of past Winter Olympics stretch back—however faintly—to 1976 Winter Olympics, then vividly to 1980 Winter Olympics and 1984 Winter Olympics. Over the years, host towns like Albertville and Lillehammer always appeared postcard-perfect from the comfort of my living room.

This year, that postcard became reality.

Traveling to Cortina d’Ampezzo—tucked high in the breathtaking Dolomites—felt like stepping into a dream. While the Games are shared between Milan and Cortina, I’m grateful our Olympic journey began in the mountains rather than the bustle of Italy’s second-largest city.

Cortina offered something intimate and magical. Along Corso Italia, the town’s main street, visitors and locals blended effortlessly—laughing, lingering, celebrating. It felt less like a mega-event and more like a festival woven into the fabric of a tiny alpine village. Snow-capped peaks towered above us as conversations flowed freely below.

In this special bonus edition of Conversations with Sports Fans, I’m joined by my wife, Carol; my friend, Tim; and Tim’s wife, Tracey. Together, we reflect on the energy, charm and atmosphere of our time in Cortina—before boarding a train for a day trip to Milan to continue our Olympic adventure.

The mountains gave us magic. Milan promised momentum. And the journey, as always, was about more than the event—it was about the experience we shared along the way.
