Trust in Action: What Everyday Moments Reveal About Business Credibility

Why being credible is critical to the success of your business development efforts

After releasing our annual Trust Report, our Chief Trust Officer, Anoop Joshi, reflected on a simple yet powerful idea: what does trust really mean in business?

At a recent event, he was asked this exact question. His answer was straightforward—trust is built in every interaction you have with your customers. It’s not something you achieve once and move on from; it’s something you earn continuously.

You don’t build trust just by launching a product or running a campaign. It comes from consistently keeping your promises, being transparent, and showing accountability—especially when things don’t go as planned.

Consider a small but telling example: a missed delivery. A skip was booked during a house move, but it never showed up—and there was no communication from the company. Mistakes happen, but silence erodes confidence. That single moment is often enough to lose a customer for good. Whether you’re a local business or a global brand, one poor experience can outweigh years of reliability.

Going Further Than Expected

So, what separates brands that earn lasting trust? It often comes down to three key behaviors:

1. Authenticity matters
Being genuine builds a strong foundation. When customers believe in your intent, they’re more willing to give you a second chance if something goes wrong.

2. Exceeding expectations
Small, unexpected actions can leave a lasting impression. For example, automatically refunding a price difference or offering easy access to human support—these gestures show customers they’re valued, not just processed.

3. Knowing your audience
Understanding customer needs isn’t as complicated as it sounds—we’re all consumers ourselves. The real question is: what would impress you if roles were reversed?

Trust Is Not Optional—It’s Essential

Some businesses treat trust as a “nice to have,” but in reality, it’s the backbone of long-term success. Listening to customer feedback and acting on it not only strengthens relationships but also guides smarter growth and innovation.

This becomes even more critical during uncertain times—whether economic challenges or global instability. In such moments, people naturally gravitate toward brands they trust.

A Continuous Commitment

Since its founding in 2007, Trustpilot has been focused on strengthening trust between businesses and consumers. But like any organization, the journey is ongoing.

The annual Trust Report highlights both progress and challenges—such as tackling fake reviews and improving platform integrity. This year, a new principle was added to the existing values of Neutrality, Openness, Fairness, and Transparency: Relevance.

Why relevance? Because in a world flooded with information, what matters most is surfacing what’s truly useful—helping consumers make confident decisions and ensuring expectations are actually met.

Getting It Right—Every Time

There’s a saying that captures this mindset well: amateurs practice until they succeed, professionals practice until they can’t fail. That’s the approach to managing high-stakes decisions—building systems that consistently deliver the right outcomes.

Trust isn’t built overnight, and it’s never “complete.” It’s an ongoing effort—listening, improving, and aiming to exceed expectations at every touchpoint. Because in today’s world, trust isn’t just valuable—it’s everything.
