Nokia 2 Starts Receiving February Android Security Update

Nokia 2 has started receiving a new software update that includes the February Android security patch. Initially, the new update is reportedly rolling out in India for the model TA-1011. The update comes days after Google formally released the February Android security patch for compatible Pixel and Nexus devices. HMD Global, the company behind Nokia smartphones, previously brought the same security patch for Nokia 8 and Nokia 3 models.

The latest Android update doesn’t bring any noticeable changes to the Nokia 2, though it includes the new Android security patch, as reported by folks at NokiaPowerUser. The update is 89.3MB in size and is available as an OTA (over-the-air) release. You can check its availability by going to Settings About phone > Software updates.

The February Android security patch on the latest Nokia 2 update includes a fix for a critical security vulnerability related to Media framework. Google in its recent security bulletin stated that the vulnerability “could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process.” The new security patch also fixes some system-level flaws as well as a loophole that could allow a “local malicious application to execute commands” that are usually available to privileged processes. Further, there are various tweaks to fix security issues on the component side, including patches for various Qualcomm components.

While the new update for the Nokia 2 doesn’t bring any major change on the part of its user experience, HMD Global is separately working to bring directly Android 8.1 Oreo to the handset that is currently running Android 7.1 Nougat. HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas late last year announced the development of Android 8.1 for the Nokia 2. The executive also hinted that the Finnish company is planning to bring some Android Go memory management improvements to the affordable Nokia model.

Launched in October last year, the Android Nougat-based Nokia 2 features a 5-inch LTPS HD (720×1280 pixels) display and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC, coupled with 1GB of RAM. The smartphone has an 8-megapixel rear camera sensor with an LED flash and a 5-megapixel front camera sensor. It packs a 4000mAh battery that is claimed to deliver two days of power on a single charge.
