LTE-enabled Apple Watch Series 3 said to debut by the end of the year

A report from Bloomberg cited ”person/persons familiar with the matter” four times, so we will approach this story with the deserved amount of skepticism.

According to the report, Apple could be releasing an LTE-enabled Apple Watch alongside the iPhone 8 or toward the end of the year. But according to “another person familiar with the matter” (from the same report, mind you) it could be delayed well into 2018”. Do you see where the skepticism comes in?

Anyhow, Apple had reportedly delayed an LTE-enabled version of the Watch before the Series 2 launched but had to put it off because it needed more time to improve overall battery life over an LTE connection, which is limited by the battery’s relatively smaller size compared to a smartphone. Speaking of LTE, Intel is slated to provide the modem chips for LTE. Qualcomm was Apple’s main modem supplier but the two companies are in a bit of a legal bind at the moment.

Back to the report, Apple was said to have already been talking to US carriers about its connected wearable. Carrier support would be limited at launch, though the four major US carriers are all said to plan to sell the new Watch.

1st-gen Apple Watch

Here’s why we think it’s still too early for Apple to release a new watch: Apple’s first watch was released in April of 2015 and the new Series 2 came out alongside the iPhone 7 in September of 2016, about 1.5 years later. Following this timeframe (because this is all we have to go off of) it’s more likely that Apple would launch a Series 3 Watch in Q2 of 2018 to offset the launch of its iPhone 8, which is supposed to start at $850. Furthermore, Tim Cook said that the Apple Watch’s sales have grown 50% year over year and is the #1 selling smartwatch “by a very wide margin”.

If you had a product and it was selling increasingly well, you’d want to ride the wave as long as possible, right? Apple would be jumping the gun if it released the Series 3 next to the iPhone 8 in September. We are just speculating here since, for all we know, Apple could even release a new Apple Watch next to every iPhone from here on out. A more likely scenario is Apple releasing an LTE-enabled Apple Watch Series 2 next to the iPhone 8.

This report is definitely one of the more obscure ones. So we personally won’t be holding our breaths for a new Apple Watch this September.

Top 6 sports cars spied in July

Top 6 sports cars spied in July

We love cars that are fast and furious and it doesn’t matter what size they are. These cars evolve with time and it is always interesting to see how they are going to turn out in the next iteration. Here are a few sports cars that we have spotted testing over the last month.

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato

Zagato, the Italian coach-builder, is known for their unique design style marked by the signature rear fenders and the double-bubble on the roof. The latest sportscar to get the Zagato treatment is the Aston Martin Vanquish. Sadly, there is no hard-top for the double bubble but the vintage lines can be seen on the Volante and Speedster. The Volante gets a soft top and the Speedster is an open-top fury.

Ford Mustang

Well, what can be better than spotting two new Mustangs? The first one is the new Ford Mustang for the European market while the other one is the GT350. The GT badge has been immortalised by the large V8 engines belting out insane amounts of power. We already have the pony car in India and we certainly wouldn’t mind the GT coming in soon!

The BMW Z5 is the successor of the largely popular two-seater convertible, the Z4. While it continues to get the long hood, the bubble-cabin and the stubby boot, the design style now depicts the latest Beemers. It gets the signature twin-ring headlamps and should be powered by four and six cylinder petrol engines driving the rear wheels.

Renault Megane RS

The Renault Megane RS has been French’s answer to Volkswagen’s Golf GTI. It is a large hatch that packs all the performance of a mini supercar in it and is the only French hot hatch. The new Megane RS gets the all-new Renault fascia, an entire aero pack and revised suspension to handle its power and speed.

Porsche 718 Boxster GTS

The tiniest Porsche is now set to get more horsepower. While the standard 718 gets a four cylinder engine, the GTS should have ideally got a six cylinder. Sadly, the fleet emission laws will end up keeping the pots down to four but the GTS will certainly have more horses at the whip than the standard Boxster.

Jaguar XE SVR

Jaguar had teased the Project 8 and now we have the spy pictures of the XE SVR. While we are not sure if they are the same, we are sure about one thing and that is the unbridled performance of this car. The 5.0-litre V8 will be pumping some insane horsepower and will make sure it gives the M3s and the C63s a run for their money

WR-V spearheads Honda’s surge in Q3 2017

WR-V spearheads Honda’s surge in Q3 2017Car sales were expected to surge after the GST roll out and now it seems like the market has reacted exactly as predicted. Honda has reported its second highest numbers of 2017 after it managed to sell 17,085 units in the month of July. Leading the pack is the Honda WR-V, as the SUV just edged past Honda’s long-time bestseller, the Honda City.

Honda WR-V managed to sell 4,894 units in July, about 600 units more than it sold in June, plotting a steady rise in its sales charts. The rising graph shows the popularity of SUVs despite Honda selling only higher end trims that come at a premium. The Honda City seems to have lost a bit of steam after the initial surge post the launch of the facelift. With just 4,854 units sold in July, the City has registered its second lowest numbers over the past six months.

The Honda Jazz premium hatchback and the Amaze compact sedans have also shown a sharp rise over sales of the past two months, but that might be because of the deferred deliveries and stocks despatch to work around the GST. Even the BR-V has limped past the 1,000 units mark after almost four months.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Alpha AT launched at Rs 7.01 lakhs

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Alpha AT launched at Rs 7.01 lakhs

Maruti Suzuki is finally offering the automatic option for the top-spec variant of the Ignis hatchback. Although the Ignis was already being offered with an AMT automatic transmission, the option was restricted to the mid-variants only. But now, it has been extended to the top-spec Alpha trim at a price tag of Rs 7.01 lakhs for the petrol engine while the diesel Alpha AMT is priced at Rs 8.08 lakhs (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).

The AMT automatic transmission is called the Auto Gear Shift (AGS) by Maruti Suzuki. In the Ignis, the AMT comes mated to the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that produces 82bhp and 113Nm. The oil burner, on the other hand, has a 1.3-litre DDiS motor that puts out 75bhp and 190Nm.

The top-spec Alpha trim is sheer feature fest with start-stop push button system, keyless entry, four speakers, parking sensors for the rear, defogger at the rear along with a wiper and 15-inch alloys. It also comes with projector headlamps, LED DRLs, puddle lamp, auto climate-control and height adjustable driver seat. The Alpha spec also offers reverse parking camera, climate control and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The automatic transmission in the top-spec was the only thing missing in the Ignis portfolio until now. The millennial hatchback goes up against the likes of Hyundai Grand i10, Honda Brio, Mahindra KUV100 and the Tata Bolt in India.

Commenting on the introduction of Ignis Alpha AMT, R S Kalsi, senior executive director, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Our premium urban compact vehicle, the Ignis, has been created for millennials, a one of a kind brand in the Indian market. Automatic Gear Shift (AGS) on the Ignis, so far offered in the Delta and Zeta trims, has been widely appreciated by customers and accounts for 27 percent of Ignis sales. We are now offering AGS in the top Alpha trim as well. We expect this to strengthen brand Ignis and enhance the popularity of AGS amongst millennials.”

The carmaker recently introduced the Baleno premium hatch back with the CVT transmission in the top-spec Alpha trim. The Ignis becomes the second vehicle from Maruti after Dzire to be offered in with automatic transmission in both petrol and diesel engine. The AMT variant of the Ignis Alpha trim comes at an added premium of Rs 54,000 compared to the equivalent manual trim.

Suzuki officially releases more details of the Swift Sport

Suzuki officially releases more details of the Swift Sport

Suzuki released a single image of the all-new Swift Sport with a promise of global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. However, a few days ago, a brochure of the hot hatch was leaked on the internet, revealing more details of the much-awaited car. Now Suzuki has officially given out more details ahead of the Frankfurt debut.

The third generation of the Swift Sport wears a new and aggressive front bumper as compared to standard Swift on sale in Europe and Japan. The front grille is black mesh with a tweaked design while the all-new 17-inch alloys design is something usually seen on Italian performance cars. What’s new are the dual exhaust tips sticking out of the aggressive rear diffuser reflecting the sporty intentions of the Japanese hot hatch. The new Swift Sport, unlike the two generations before it, will be available in the four-door configuration only.

On the inside, the Swift Sport will get an all-black interior with contrast red stitching and blood-red inserts all around the cabin. The tachometer too gets a red treatment, but the center screen on the instrument cluster now comes with a boost gauge in a typical JDM fashion. The infotainment screen will come with smartphone integration as well. Everywhere else, the cabin remains the same.

It has been confirmed now that the engine will be a turbocharged 1.4-litre Boosterjet from the Suzuki Vitara S. The turbocharged unit replaces the naturally aspirated 1.6-litre unit from the outgoing car, while the power bumps to around 145bhp and the torque is rated at 220Nm. Since it is based on the new platform, the new Swift Sport will be a lot lighter than the previous car, tipping the scale at a low 870kg. Thus with an impressive power-to-weight ratio, the new Swift Sport will be a ballistic pocket rocket. All the crazy power will be sent to front wheels only via a six-speed manual transmission.

The new Swift Sport will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt stage on 12 September. CarWale will be there as well. Stay tuned.

E-sports is here to stay so it’s time we began to understand how it got here, who is behind it and what exactly it is

Game developer Activision Blizzard’s international city-based franchise, Overwatch League, is full-steam ahead, with teams reportedly selling for up to US$20 million.

Chinese internet giant Tencent has announced plans to invest US$15 billion into Chinese e-sports in the next five years. And the Hong Kong Tourism Board is presenting its HK$35 million e-sports gambit – the e-sports and K-pop music festival– this weekend in the Coliseum.

They are all part of a broader trend sweeping the worlds of sports, business and media from Los Angeles to Shanghai.

Announcements are made weekly of million-dollar prize pools, celebrity team owners (Shaq, Ashton Kutcher), massive team sponsorship deals (Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Vodafone) and serious investments from major media companies (Modern Times Group, Facebook).

The business world is giddy at the prospect of tapping into that most lucrative but tricky of demographics: millennials.

With 385 million e-sports fans around the world it’s easy to see why they’re so fired up.

In the e-sports community, many are delighted to finally get investment that could elevate the scene to the heights of traditional sports.

However, just as many are sounding the alarm at the glut of money that’s flooding the scene. They fear a crash is on it’s way that will set the scene back another 10 years.

Given the eye-watering sums of money being thrown around and the sometimes shocking lack of knowledge of those involved, it’s not hard to see why people are worried.

Even if the trend continues, the future will not be rosy for most of those involved. E-sports joining the big leagues means a repeat of the history of sports. The real history of sports is the business of sports. And that business was brutal. The backroom deals which built global powers like Fifa, the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL had no space for sportsmanship.

E-sports may yet prove itself a different beast. Endemic organisations, professional players, and the massive e-sports fan base regularly captivate with the kind of stories that we’ve come to expect from the socially conscious millennial generation.

E-sports fans are building passionate communities that may yet temper corporate ambitions.

We will introduce you to the world of e-sports, tell some of the most interesting stories, and guess (roughly) what the future may hold.

1 Business

The business world sees e-sports as a massive opportunity. Major players – game developers, traditional sports, media and advertising – see it fitting nicely into the well-defined and immensely lucrative existing framework. Endemics on the other hand, see it as a cultural movement that can forge its own path, upending the sports and business worlds in the process. We’ll take a look at the biggest deals and their impact on the business landscape.

2 People & Society

For those seeking to build a career in e-sports, the business is a roller coaster of heartbreak and elation. Players are betting their future on a place at the top of the professional scene. The scene is a window into the world of a new generation.

Fans see e-sports and participation in the scene as the evolution of competitive spirit. For those born in the age of the internet, traditional sport fails to deliver on the levels of engagement they enjoy in e-sports. Many are capitalising on this, making a living – and in some cases huge incomes – on Twitch and other platforms where they can connect with like-minded individuals. The mainstream rolls its eyes or shakes its head in disbelief.

E-sports isn’t just a dream for individuals. Governments are shaping legislation around it, and others, such as the Hong Kong Tourism Board are even staking the future of entire sectors on it.

3 Technology

E-sports was born in the arcade, and brought up in the era of social media. As a natural partner to technology, e-sports has amazing potential. New businesses are being founded all the time with the aim of meeting the needs of the scene. And many believe e-sports could be the area where the promise of augmented reality and virtual reality comes true.

4 What is it?

E-sports is many different things to many different people. For the mainstream it’s an exciting new phenomenon. For e-sports fans it’s the evolution of a scene that traces its roots back to the competitive gaming and arcade scene of the ’70s and ’80s. E-sports is complicated and frequently misunderstood. The development is also not always viewed positively by those involved in the wider gaming community. We’ll take a closer look at the different games and their cultures, the different aspects of the scene, and we talk to those involved to get their perspectives on what e-sports is to them.

5 The Future

Lastly, we’ll take a stab at where e-sports might be going, the factors at play that will determine which road the scene will go down, and the potential impact it could have on those involved, business, and society as a whole. We’ll discuss some possibilities, and get opinions of those who really understand the scene.

The only thing that’s certain is that it’s here to stay, in some form or another.
